This finely painted and characterful miniature displays all the idiosyncrasies of Joseph Pastorini, particularly his distinctive use of gummy cross-hatching in the background of his miniatures. A variable artist, he enjoyed a lucrative career in England from the age of 20, entering the R.A. schools in 1795 (shortly prior to the date of this miniature). He died in London in 1839, having painted aristocratic and royal patrons, such as William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester (now at Windsor Castle).
